Joyful Sounds

In only two years, we’ve grown an effective, economically efficient nonprofit which promises to change the tide of poverty in thousands of children’s lives. We have supporters, but not nearly enough to effect the kind of changes that we are expecting to see. The children I work with have many forces (economic, social and generational) all working against their futures. They drink dirty water, have little or no access to healthcare, have never been to a dentist; many are jaundiced and have bleeding gums. They go without shoes and cannot rely on regular meals, dependable electricity, or a regular place to go the bathroom. They have no privacy and they are often sent out to scavenge or beg. So you can imagine their futures: alcoholism, gambling, prostitution and other self destructive behaviors. We have over 220 of these kids in a training center to tutor them in math, English and proper use and writing of their native language. Even $10 a month gets a young child out of the slum and into a classroom chair, with a spiffy uniform and school books. Imagine how they feel about themselves when they sit down in a classroom for the very first time. I get to see this. I get to see their happy smiles and sense of pride – maybe something they’ve never experienced ’til this moment. Help me help them. I work with a handful of pastors who live in the same communities as these kids. They are dedicated, hard working, faithful and trustworthy. And they care for the kids regardless of faith.
